Visiting the Schraer Greats

– Sunday -

On our way to Billings, we made a few important stops…

IMG_5909 Of course we had to have dinner at Pickle Barrrel as we drove through Bozeman. This is the real deal, the original and it was delicious. You can’t understand unless you’ve had a sandwich from this place. It is almost worth driving 12 hours just to get one. I wish we had a close up picture of just the sandwich so you could get the idea. They are huge and delicious. This place is highly recommended if you make it to Montana. I order the “Ken’s Special” and Mike gets the “Bobcat Special”.

IMG_5919 This sandwich shop is right by the MSU campus, so we took a stroll to show the girls our old stomping ground. It was fun to see it all again. This is where we met…and we ate a lot of Pickel Barrel sandwiches back then. Oh the memories!

We made it to Billings on Sunday evening. The weather was cool and stormy looking, but didn’t really bother us. The girls made their way right to the park across the street. I had forgotten that park, but my siblings, cousins and I loved that park when we were kids. At least all the play equipment is now updated. The adults all sat on my grandparents’ front porch watching them play.

- Monday -

On Monday we woke up slowly and got up to enjoy pancakes. The girls wanted to play at the park all day, but eventually we tore them away to go to my aunt’s consignment shop. (It used to be my gramma’s). We found a few outfits while Mike took Grampa over to Cabella’s to find some fly tying materials.

IMG_5944That afternoon (after some more time at the park), we sat the girls down to watch a movie so Mike and I could go get a coffee and use the high-speed internet at the coffee shop. We aren’t used to having only dial-up available! It has been weird to be off the internet so much.

IMG_5935(Aren’t we ridiculous? Here I am sitting in a rustic campsite, in my tent trailer with the light on and using my laptop to type this blog post!)

That evening my aunt Linda and uncle Bob brought tasty homemade bbq chicken and dessert over to feed the whole family. We got to see my aunt Patty too and a few various cousins. I can’t believe how old we all are, though I’m the only one with kids. It was nice to see everyone and just hang for awhile like the old days.

IMG_5953After we got the girls down to bed, Mike and I listened to my Grampa tell his fish stories and show us some old pictures. I just love to hear all that history. I wish I could capture it all.

IMG_5958

- Tuesday -

In the morning we went to get a donut. I told my grampa that was one of my greatest memories from being a kid. When I spent the night at their house he often took me over to the “Donut Hole”. He always met some buddies there and had coffee. I guess the Donut Hole is gone now, and so are a lot of his buddies, but we still took the girls and found a bakery and some tasty donuts.

IMG_5974After that we packed up all our stuff again to head off. We left about noon and went back toward Bozeman. We stopped there and found a geocache before going up on campus to check out the Student Union building and the MSU bookstore…I love to buy new pens…for some reason it just brings me great joy! Mike got me a MSU sweatshirt and the girls a MSU basketball, so we are all decked out as alumni! Mike and I even played a game of air hockey like the old days…and I almost won!

IMG_5991IMG_5996 IMG_5997 IMG_5998

From Bozeman we went south toward Yellowtone Park. That area was Mike’s old stomping grounds when he was at school. He loved to go fishing and hiking with his friends. We found an old favorite campground on Swan Creek that is beautiful! He and Kelby got to fishing right away and found lots of big fish in this little stream. Mike caught them and Kelby took pictures for him!

IMG_6010It was a little chilly and rained a little, but nothing the heater in the tent trailer couldn’t handle! We packed up in the morning and then we were off to Yellowstone.

On the Road Again

We left the house, Friday July 24th at 4:00, to start our trip off to Montana and Yellowstone Park. I’ve been working all week to make sure we were ready to go! I’m so excited to see family and friends and have an adventure with Mike and the girls.

Our first night we' stayed at Wanapum State Park just past Ellensberg. We only traveled about 3 hours the first night, but then we didn’t have as far to go the next day. The campground was pretty open (and full). They kept us up late into the evening with their laughing and hollering.

On Saturday morning we packed up the tent trailer and then stopped at Ginkgo State Park to find an “earthcache”. That’s a new one for us. Earthcaches are similar to geocaches, but you don’t actually have a hidden box to find, but answers to questions instead.

IMG_5875

That is a rock Anika is standing on, not a log. This is right on the Columbia River. It was super pretty!

IMG_5878This park holds a petrified forest so we had to go for a little stroll to find out which trees were which species to answer the questions. It took us a while and it was hot, but it was interesting.

After that we were off to St. Regis, MT. We got to meet up with our friend Scott (Mike’s best man) and his family. They came up from Missoula to meet us. The dads got to fish on a river that Mike has been dreaming of fishing ever since he was in college. The moms and kids sat by the river and played. The water wasn’t too cold and the kids got right in and swam. They loved it and got along with the other kids really well!

IMG_5888 IMG_5886IMG_5891

Kelby wasn’t feeling very well, so that was a little bummer.

IMG_5901James and Tegan seemed to get along great! The kids all played while I made dinner for our company. Irene brought a delicious dessert she had made. We took them on a wild goose chase walk to find a geocache. When we got to where it was hidden there was a guy hanging out, so we had to distract him while Mike looked for the cache. (You aren’t supposed to let non-geocachers see you find a cache). Mike found it, but had lost his pen to sign it. The poor kids got pooped out by the time we were done.

We had a quieter night’s sleep that night except for the thunder and lightning. Me and the girls slept through that, but I guess Michael enjoyed watching it because he couldn’t sleep. He got up early to go try fishing again, and I packed up so we could be off again, headed toward Billings.

A Week of Day Camp

Well, the weather here has been super-dooper. For us it is HOT at 87 degrees! For me, it was extra-ordinarily hot because I was at my church with 202 other adults and children in a non-air-conditioned “ark”.

Since Monday me and the girls have been going to the church by 8:00 and not getting done until around 4:30 each afternoon for church camp. It has been non-stop fun.

IMG_5797I got to be part of a crew that had five day camp kids and six helpers! Tegan and Anika got to attend camp and Kelby was a helper with me.

The first day we got to see Reptile Man. Here’s Tegan looking at a snake!

IMG_5778

Here’s me with one of my kids. I had a great time being a leader, although I am pooped!

IMG_5756

On Tuesday Anika got to go to the pony farm as part of camp. I took a group of kids to the same place, so I got to take pictures of her. Sadly, I didn’t get to see Tegan when it was her turn to ride horses.

IMG_5820One day we went out to a beach park, and one day we went in the pool. Today we had the big singing presentation and family BBQ. We got to do crafts and other great regular camp stuff, but my favorite part was the music. We got to learn great songs and do the motions.

IMG_5838 Yeah, it’s done…I now have a week “off”…with nothing planned! I hope to relax a little, but I’ll also be preparing for our trip to Yellowstone park coming up. Yikes! The summer is flying by!

Mommy and Me Bible Camp - God Rocks!

Even though I feel like I’ve been going NON-Stop since school got out mid-June, there was no stopping us!

Long before school got out I was struck by a lightning bolt in my brain. I got the crazy idea of taking the girls on my own Bible campout. Bible camp is very expensive and it’s hard to find a camp that I would trust to take my girls. So I made a reservation at a campground out at the Washington State Park beach called Deception Pass for three days. It isn’t too far away and yet has great facilities, a lake AND beach in one spot!

IMG_5651

The big week snuck up on me so fast that I almost wasn’t prepared to make it fun. I had been thinking of themes and ideas for awhile, but ended up pulling it together only the day before we left. Some of it I did on the fly.

On Tuesday the weather turned a little rainy, so when we got out to the campground in the afternoon later than we’d hoped, we weren’t too sad that we missed “beach” time. As I set up the trailer, the girls scoped out the site and found a super cool log (their favorite campground amenity). The log lead into the woods where they found what they called “the clubhouse” which was just a big open space back in the trees. There was a big rock there they could climb.

We even decorated the trailer for camp!

IMG_5700 Once camp was set, our first order of business was craft time. We each made a journal. The girls seemed to have a good time decorating them.

IMG_5703

I made dinner and afterward, I built my first campfire! I can’t believe I’ve never started a fire myself. It wasn’t too bad. We made a new treat. You take a marshmallow and wrap it in a refrigerator biscuit, then roast it over the fire. It is called a “cream puff”. Pretty tasty.

IMG_5656

Each evening we had a time of reading a Bible story and finding interesting things from it. Our theme was “God Rocks” so our first story was about the wise man that builds his house upon the rock. The girls got to draw and color while we talked.

In the morning the weather was still rainy. The beauty of the trailer is that is nice in rain or shine! We were hooked up to electricity so we had lights and easy heat. The girls love to huddle up by the heater to warm up their clothes before they get dressed.

IMG_5657

We began the day with a “rock walk”. We hiked down to the beach and collected rocks and drift wood for a craft later that day.

IMG_5665  IMG_5671 IMG_5677
Even though it was rainy, the weather wasn’t miserable. The girls actually loved the opportunity to wear their $0.99 ponchos!

Later that morning we made our camp t-shirts! I’m especially proud of this easy idea. Before we left home I used my “Cricut” cutting machine to cut a stencil design out of contact paper. The paper is sticky so I stuck a stencil to each of our shirts. Then we used regular acrylic paint to sponge over the stencil to create our great “God Rocks” shirts! Super cute!

IMG_5689

Here’s a tasty PBJ alternative that we tried! That’s a banana as the “hot dog” and peanut butter and jelly on a hotdog bun!

IMG_5684

We went out into the woods for our Bible study time. I made pages for our journal using the SOAP Bible study method. “S” stands for scripture where you write your favorite scripture from the section you read. “O” is observation, “A” is application, and “P” is prayer. It was confusing for the girls, but we ended up doing it together and really got a lot out of it! I think they even liked it.

IMG_5688Our afternoon craft was building our little rock people! We had a ton of fun with these. Ya gotta love having a theme involving rocks!

IMG_5697

The girls liked having free time where they could ride their scooters down the “bathroom hill”…which was obviously the hill that lead down to the bathroom!

IMG_5692

We didn’t get any beach time on Wednesday because of the rain, but we wouldn’t have had enough time anyway. I can’t believe how fast the time flew. We were going to try to get some geocaching in and didn’t have time for that either.

I made my second campfire that night! Our campfire snack, “mock toasted angel cake”  wasn’t as successful this time. It was bread dipped in sweetened condensed milk and rolled in coconut toasted in the fire. All the stuff fell off and burned in the fire.

One of our favorite activities was journal time at night. I brought along a COOL new art supply that the girls loved. I bought “watercolor crayons” from Stampin’ Up and although they are pretty expensive, the lovely art we created made them worth it! You color with them, then use a wet paintbrush to spread the color. They make us all out to be real artists!

On Thursday we woke up to sun, so the girls could hardly wait to get to the beach. I had them quick decorate bags for their morning craft and do Bible study. Then we packed our lunch and were off to the water.

IMG_5706 The girls loved swimming and playing on the sandy shore building moats and mounds. The lake was nice and warm…at least compared to the ocean water on the other side.IMG_5713 IMG_5714 IMG_5715

Yeah for the concession stand where we got yummy ice creams. I finished a book that day, but also waded out into the water for a bit too.

IMG_5721

We missed our afternoon activity time that day too because we stayed so long at the lake. It was time for dinner already when we got back. We did get a chance to do a quick craft where we turned one of our favorite collected rocks into a necklace.

IMG_5724

That evening we didn’t make a campfire, but went for walk to look for a geocache instead. We were rewarded with a beautiful view of the ocean at the pass.

Here’s the girls, standing on the “rock”!IMG_5726 IMG_5727See, I was there too! Don’t look at my camping hair though! IMG_5730

We tossed rocks into the water for awhile and then built this little tower. The idea came from the Bible story we read where the Israelites built a tower of 12 rocks from out of the Jordan river as a reminder of God’s power in getting them into the promised land.

IMG_5747

Even though I really barely pulled this trip together, God tied together all the loose strings for me! I was surprised at how much fun we had and how we enjoyed learning about God together.

I don’t take enough time to teach the girls about the Bible on a regular basis, leaving that up to church on Sunday, but I’m so glad I had this opportunity. I want our spiritual lives to be something we can talk about openly and share together…what a fun way to open that door!

I learned as much about myself as they learned. I learned that they are old enough to understand a lot. I learned that I could keep them engaged and excited for three whole days at a time. I even learned I could build a fire by myself!

Fourth of July

Sedro-Woolley has a ton of great 4th activities, so we get to stay close to home. Our traditional Fourth of July activities always start with the Loggerrodeo Race. Mike runs the 5K every year.

IMG_5625 The girls and I take the opportunity to scope out our parade route viewing spot. This is always a challenge because people come and line the street with their folding chairs in the middle of the night, taking all the best spots long before we get there 2 hours early!

IMG_5626

The weather was perfect this year!! We got a spot in the shade to watch the parade. The girls scored a ton of candy as always.

  IMG_5632IMG_5628IMG_5637

IMG_5638After the parade we went home and Great Grampa Lohman came over to play a game called Fast Track with us. It’s a great game that is a mixture of Aggravation with decks of cards.

That afternoon we all took naps and got up about 7:00 pm! Mike popped a ton of popcorn and we rode our bikes down to our neighborhood park. The girls played while we waited for the fireworks display. It was fun to ride our bikes in the dark on the way home while everyone lit their personal fireworks. Quite the adventure!    IMG_5648

We had a very nice holiday! Hope you all did too!

Summer 2015

This is how we roll… Summer has been full of studying for me, working for Mike, Kelby, and Tegan, and hanging out for Anika! We have spent ...
