Over the last three months, we had a lot of great fun in Girl Scouts! Here are the highlights.
Anika’s Troop
Anika’s Girl Scout troop got to go to the Fire Station in March. Funny thing, I don’t have any pictures of Anika at that field trip!
Anika’s troop used their cookie money to spend the night at the Seattle Pacific Science Center. Kelby and Tegan got to come too. It was so much fun! They got to do a workshop where they made balloon powered cars. We got to go to the laser light show, planetarium, butterfly exhibit, and learn lots and lots!
Tegan loves to show her stuff on the pull up bar.
Here they are looking at the butterfly cocoons.
After spending the night at the Science Center, they got up and did a couple more fun things and then we were off to spend the rest of the day at the Woodland Park Zoo.
Troop 43583
The older Girl Scout troop also did a lot of fun things during the last part of the school year. We had a “birthday party” for the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouts and a lot of guest speakers for the last few meetings. For one meeting we had some homeschool friends come and show my troop how to make polymer clay earrings. The troop was so impressed because the girls sell their earrings to make money for cancer research. They were inspiring!
The next meeting we had a woman that creates her own jewelry come in and show us her collection and explain how she did it. The girls were fascinated by her. She had even done the rock hounding herself and told us about that as well.
She and Me Encamporee
At the end of April we spent a weekend at “She and Me Encamporee”. It was a fun Girl Scout camp if I do say so myself. It was my baby. I planned the whole thing as camp director. We stayed at a camp near Deception Pass that was just beautiful. Gramma Debbie came to be a second “she” for the girls since I was to be busy doing director stuff. It was so nice that the girl had her to hang out with.
We did arts and crafts and got to go hiking and play games. We also learned stuff about the old things of Girl Scouts as a celebration of the 100th year of Girl Scouts this year.
We even played basketball in bloomers like way back when!
Here’s the whole bunch of gals that enjoyed the weekend with us.
Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium
On May 19 my older troop went down to Tacoma to visit the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium for an overnight sleepover there. That was how they spent their cookie money. It took us two hours to drive down there, but it was worth it!
The only bummer was that Kelby hit her head on Anika’s head while jumping on the trampoline as we were packing up. She saw stars…and had striped vision for awhile, but I just had her lay down. Everyone was coming to our house to leave right at that time. She started feeling better, so we just loaded up and headed down…but, about 20 minutes into the ride, she started feeling very sick. We thought it was car sickness, but she never gets that sick normally. She threw up two times on the way down. Poor thing. She was not herself while we were down there and in the end I decided she had a mild concussion. It wasn’t bad enough to take her to the hospital (I called to make sure), so I’m glad she still came with us to the zoo because it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.I rented a wheelchair for her so she could keep up with the other girls.
I just LOVE meerkats!
There was a fun playground for the kids to be monkeys on!
We all loved the walrus! We don’t have any of those at the regular zoo we go to!
We also liked the polar bears!
You gotta love baby anything! This is a baby snow leopard.
We spent the afternoon at the zoo wandering on our own. It closed at 5:00, so we went to a nearby park to have a dinner. We cooked up some taco salad on the beach! Then we got to go back into the zoo for an evening there all to ourselves.
First we got a tour of the aquariums. The guide answered all the girls questions (and they had a LOT of questions!) Later we got to do a craft and then have a night hike around the zoo. The guide shined her flashlight on the animals and told us about them all. It was so fun to see them all on our own.
Then, when were done looking around we got to go set up our beds in the shark tank room! The girls all had their heads laid up against the glass and all night long, the sharks were swimming past. It was SO amazing!
In the morning we got a nice breakfast and to see the animals as they were first lead out onto the exhibits. These are the things that make us all love Girl Scouts!
End of the Year Ceremony
At the end of the school year we had a little ceremony celebration where all the kids got their badges. They earned a lot of badges and got some fun patches to commemorate all the great stuff we did this year!
These girls are welcoming the new Juniors as they “bridge” over.
Here I had my troop reading off all that they did to accomplish their Journey award which was difficult and took us the whole year. It reminded them and shared with the parents what we accomplished!
That was a fast and furious end of the school year. Now I am enjoying a little break from scouts, but I hope to take the older troop on a camping trip over the summer. I’m not sure what next year in scouts will look like, but I think we will keep doing it, but maybe at a slightly less intense rate.
